The UCSF Fresno Family Medicine Residency has graduated hundreds of residents since its inception in 1970. It's a model for community-based training that offers ambulatory and inpatient care, including obstetrics in a variety of settings.

The program is distinguished by its urban and rural family health centers, and by its weekly educational half-days covering behavioral science, family medicine, geriatrics and procedural skills topics.

Rotations in psychiatry, geriatrics, ambulatory procedures and outpatient gynecology contribute to resident training. Residents of this program get outstanding behavioral science training on behavioral science and multi-cultural topics.

As an added bonus, residents are provided certification training in Advanced Trauma Life Support (taught by the UCSF Fresno surgery program), Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics (taught by the family medicine faculty), Advanced Cardiac Life Support, and Neonatal Resuscitation (taught by the UCSF Fresno pediatric program.)

There is additional training available for residents with a special interest in public health, community health and research. UCSF Fresno offers an innovative, combined primary care residency (M.D.)/Masters in Public Health (M.P.H.) program developed in collaboration with the California State University, Fresno (CSUF) Health Science Department.

The M.D./M.P.H. program helps residents develop the training and skills necessary to conduct research and implement community based programs to improve the health status of underserved populations.
