How to Apply

If you're over 16 years of age and able to fulfill the 4 hours a week/100 hours a year requirement, please send an application email to volunteerservices@communitymedical.org. Make sure to view the complete list of volunteer requirements (below) before applying.

To volunteer for Community, you must:

  • Be at least 16 years old
  • Dedicate a minimum of 100 hours in a 1-year period

  • Commit to at least one 3-4 hour shift on the same day and time each week

  • Attend orientation and ongoing training

  • Purchase a volunteer shirt
  • Purchase and complete a background check (adults 18 and over)

Please be sure to read the list of volunteer requirements before contacting Volunteer Services.

1. Send us an email at volunteerservices@communitymedical.org. We'll contact you within a few weeks.

2. Attend either a volunteer seminar or individual interview. If selected, you’ll be invited to the monthly volunteer seminar or individual interview session. We’ll review with you the necessary requirements, expectations and available volunteer areas.

You’ll also be asked to provide some basic information, such as your availability and interests. Our goal for you is to have a firm understanding about the volunteer's role and placement at Community Health System facilities.

3. Complete a background check. Adults (18 and over) who’ll be returning for orientation will be sent a link to complete their background check.

4. Get a health screening (TB test). Once we receive your background clearance, you’ll be asked to complete a two-step tuberculosis (TB) screening. All volunteers must have a cleared TB test. This will be provided by Community at no charge to you. You may also see your primary care physician at your own cost. Additional health requirements may be required, such as COVID-19 vaccinations/booster and flu vaccine.

5. Attend volunteer orientation. The final step to becoming a Community volunteer is attending orientation or complete online. There, we'll review Community’s policies and additional program information with you.

Note: Due to the volume of requests, there may be a delay in us getting back to you. We'll contact you as open positions become available that match your availability and qualifications. If you haven't heard back from us in 30 days, you're welcome to re-apply.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

With four hospitals and many other facilities, Community Health System has volunteer opportunities in many locations.

EKG, medical records, coding and billing, research, peer counseling, IT, sterile processing, pharmacy, accounting and finance do not have volunteer roles.

Shift times are scheduled in four-hour increments that are available seven days a week depending on the needs of each department.

Our goal is to provide assistance where it’s needed most. Unfortunately, we can't guarantee specific departments, but we'll do our best to accommodate your main interests.

Absolutely. After you have completed the minimum commitment of 100 hours, we'll provide you a copy of your time and attendance.

We're unable to provide externship or internship opportunities within the volunteer program. We also can't sign any type of contract or verification regarding hours for those types of educational programs. However, those requests may be handled through your college program coordinator and Community Health System’s education department. Nurse extern opportunities can be found by searching “extern” on our careers website.

You can't use your medical licenses or medical skills while volunteering. Licenses are not used to determine where you can volunteer.

All leaves of absence of two weeks or more must be arranged through the volunteer office. Your same schedule and placement can't be guaranteed if you’re reinstated into the program.

We ask that you complete the minimum 100-hour commitment before moving to another Community location. Hours are not normally transferable.
