If you’re currently on oxygen and planning an airplane trip or relocation to a higher altitude, your doctor may order a test to determine if you need extra oxygen.

What is the High Altitude Simulation Test?

In this test, you’ll wear a mask and breathe in a mixture of gases that simulate the amount of oxygen and pressure in an airplane or high altitude. Your oxygen levels and heart rhythms will be monitored.

How to Prepare for Your Test

On the day of your test:

  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing

  • Continue to take your medications as prescribed (unless told not to by your physician)

  • Bring any prescribed oxygen supplementation device you may use

  • A light meal is acceptable before the test
